The beginning of my travels. The steps toward my future.

To my family and friends,

The past few days have been extremely busy for me. The tours last most of the day, I’m either passed out for a few hours when I return home from heat exhaustion or walking for 343049 miles. Then I just am working on my case studies or events with the group. I apologize for getting a few days behind. Today I’ve went from 7am to now just getting in after midnight. I promise I will catch up, just literally can’t update everyday I’m here.
I leave for Cinque Terra tomorrow after we meet at 8am to 12pm for a couple tours, I may or may not have wifi at my hostel but I will be back to Rome this Saturday evening. I will have then and Sunday to do my best to catch up and get my other work finished before I leave again Monday-Wednesday to Pompeii, Sorrento, and Capri a couple nights. It’s a lot but just bare with me.
I’m happy, healthy, and safe! See you soon.
Lots of love!

Classical Opera

Thursday May 19th, 2011
I finally got to skype with Dave and catch up on some emails. I think I slept a total of 3 hours, was up at 5:45 to shower, I even picked out my clothes the night before, and made my bed the next morning. I was so excited though…the Vatican tour is today!!!
I have really looked forward to this for a long time. We all met at St. Peters to tour the Museum, the Sistine Chapel, and St. Peters Basilica.
I can’t put words with how I felt, what I saw, or even the scale to the size of the structure and architecture or statues inside. My jaw stayed on the floor as I drug it behind me.
The School of Athens in the Museum, the Last Judgement, and the ceiling of the Sistine Chapel by Michelangelo is too beautiful for words. The restoration was done by Japan and their gracious 4.2 million dollars. There was a lot of “shhhushing” in that chapel as well as me being fussed at twice for trying to get pictures, yet the asians behind me took pictures and  got away with it. Bologna! St. Peter’s Basilica was by far one of top BEST places I have experienced. I recorded some scripture and chanting by one of the priests. This was the best example of “Hunny I shrunk the kids”. I felt like nothing but a speck in that church. The most luxurious color palette and architecture that was created from the outside to look like 3 or 4 stories tall when the basilica itself stands about 30 stories tall. The church is of course still used. The famous Pieta Michelangelo statue of Mary holding Jesus after the Crucifixion had so much of the attention. This piece is the only one Michelangelo did sign.
So glad we went early, the line was a mile long after we left.

That evening Adrienne, Tahesha, and myself were asked to join the leaders and sponsors at the Classical Opera. This case study belonged to Adrienne and I so to actually not just study the exterior but to experience the music, I am so grateful for. The Opera was in the Piazza Navona at the Church of St. Agnes and was built in 1642 by Girolamo Rainaldi. The 5 person ensemble consisted of a flute player, a Spanish guitar player(amazing!), another guitar player, 2 female and 1 male opera singers. The acoustics worked beautifully with their sound throughout the chapel. The first half of the concert was in one smaller chapel then we were moved to the larger chapel. On the next post is a recording of one song.
Watched some street artists perform, bought a painting, and found my favorite shop, which is a hand blown glass shop on a little back street, I bought a couple items before we headed back home that evening.

FREE DAY!!! Woke up early to meet everyone in St.Peter’s to walk to Jeremy and Lauren Ross’s place for breakfast. Their apt is owned by a well known politician of Rome, more like an Oprah of the area, and gave them his place for their entire stay. So you can imagine how nice this apartment was. Afterwards we decided to all go to the Beach, instead of only a few, and the 25 of us went to enjoy a relaxing day in the sun. Buried Alexa in the sand and turned here into a mermaid, got some rays, and after 4 hours headed back on a packed full bus, train ride, then the metro. As soon as we got back we finally went to dinner close by our apt at this small cocktail bar. Came back and didn’t mean to pass out but eventually woke up at 2am, stayed up for a couple hours, then back to bed to sleep into the next day.
Just a side thought-some of our group members are ignorant and it really hit me today how disrespectful some of them can be towards Italians, just blatantly loud and almost embarrassing for me to be around them. There was no consideration. Need I remind them that we aren’t in America anymore, this isn’t our place, most of them do know what we’re saying, and even in America when other foreigners visit they are respectful, some more quiet, and just understand common sense. No wonder Italians practically hate us. You can’t come into their home acting like you own the place and that’s what happened today. I felt like the adult and backed away from it all, even some of the older ones should have known better. We all want to have fun and enjoy this, but grow up and have some decency.

I think we all just needed one day to sleep and we all did until about lunchtime. My body clock is finally adjusting. Worked on postcards, my journals, went to the grocery store, did some laundry, got ready and the 5 of us girls went shopping down Via Candia. I have apparently had a problem with only buying jewelry-rings mainly, bags, and cobalt blue is my color of the month I suppose. I have found some great things, yesterday a couple more rings-including this octopus ring, a cardigan, and these saucy camel colored heels. The shoes here beat any other place! One store I only want to order shoes from from now on in the states. I’ve got most my gift shopping done as well, just a few left and a few more postcards. We ended up having Chinese food for dinner tonight…I hope that chicken wasn’t actually puppy though, it was sooooo good ;)

Via Cipro

Sunday May 22nd, 2011
Have done nothing but snack, fill out postcards, catch up on my journal, my blog, and about to wonder the streets in search of my next case study to write on-Parco della Musica which is a large concert complex. A metro stop and bus ride away, quiet a bit of walking, but I should get some great notes and pictures especially here in the cool evening. Finding it will be like a game of Where’s Waldo I’m sure.
Tonight searching for hostels and train tickets for my side trip to Cinque Terre. Possibly Florence on the train ride back.

Today we spent the morning at a fresh food market place where I had the most delicious fruit cup ever! Rome has some of the greatest little cafe’s especially in the morning.
Walking tour for the Campo dei Fiori, the Trevi Fountain, the Spanish Steps (ideal place to get pinched or be given a rose then be asked to pay for it haha), Via del Corso, Via dei Condotti, the Piazza del Popolo, the Santa Maria del Popolo, and passed the Ara Pacis Museum. My group will be doing a case study there, very modern. Doesn’t really go with the rest of the city.
I also had the chance to see two Caravaggio paintings with my own two eyes. It was too good to be true. Passing by the wealthiest streets of Italy where you have Valentino, Prada, Cartier, etc..was very intimidating.
Took a nap after a very long hot day, then up again to have appetizers and drinks with our sponsors in a monastery that belongs to one of Michelangelo’s biggest rivals with an original painting of Michelangelo’s in the chapel of the church-the painting is 6 meters long.
Met with the Dean over my program at ETSU I just graduated from, she is one of the sponsors here with us a few more days, and talked to her husband awhile at dinner about my nephews and his grandchildren. His 5 year old d/l app’s and sets wallpapers on his phone to the point where he has no memory at the end of the day and Dora the Explorer as his phone background. So smart.
Afterwards about 6 of us went walking trying to orient ourselves a little more and had dinner in the Piazza Novona which was just beautiful, the fountains and architecture, and just Rome all together is stunning and peaceful at night. One of my friends here is a gymnast and I have been photographing her doing handstands in front and on top of everything I can, some places are way too scary but she’s a professional haha, I will be collaging all of those photos together soon.
Made it home very late after a fellow student was lost and four of us made sure we got her home. Annoying to say the least to a stranger from ETSU who thinks they all of a sudden “know Rome” but still the right thing to do. Very little sleep tonight.

Wednesday May 18th, 2011
The city of Rome is so much larger than I thought, they have used up every bit of space. Today was a shorter day. The Piazza Venezia-otherwise known as “The Wedding Cake” or “The Typewriter”-this is said to be the heart of Rome as far as location goes but is very overdramatic in appearance and almost tacky as compared to the true Roman way-also the number of steps I climbed to the roof of the building-I am not a fan of. Victor Emmanuel Monument, the Pallazo Venezia, San Marco, Campidoglio, Palazzo dei Conservatori, Santa Maria in Aracoeli, one of the most beautiful churches I have seen yet, every column is different and is covered with heavy detail and crystal chandeliers, the outside however you would probably pass right by. Spent hours in the Capitoline Museum feasting my eyes on preserved statues of Brutus, Caesar, Medusa’s head, and Hercules. Incredible.
Had the rest of the day off and went to the market with my roommates to buy food, that wasn’t easy when nothing is in English and very few people here know any, but I am completely open-minded to trying new foods, it’s already been a good experience.
Walking tours from now on-everything is already so sore.

Playing catch up from the past few days.

Sunday May 15th, 2011
TriCities to Chicago. Ended up hearing from old friends and met with Adrienne’s (travel buddy) family. They picked us up from the airport and showed us parts of Chicago I have always wanted to see. Afterwards had some true authentic Chicago style pizza at the oldest and top rated, BACINO’S. Could not even finish two pieces of their stuffed pizza. Gorgeous city, very segregated, but always something to do and see.
Experienced Chicago at its best…rainy, cold, and soooo windy. Didn’t stop me.

The “Bean” and “Faces”

Monday May 16th, 2011
Time change, our flight was from 4:05pm in Chicago to 9:00am arriving in Rome. The 9hr25min. plane ride felt more like 20 hours or longer. Good food, watched The Tourist and slept in cramped positions.
Finally in Rome trying to figure out the airport and waited patiently for those bags to appear.

The taxi from the airport to Piazza dell’Orologio 7-The Accent Center (where we have a short class) then to our apt overcharged us because we are Americans and do not know any better the first day. Other members of the group were waiting to greet us at the airport and help us along. Walking on cobblestone roads dragging luggage is not the easiest.
Everyone’s (about 21 to the group) is in a separate apt in a separate part of town. There are 5 girls in mine, all very nice. Tahesha, Ashley and Alexa the sisters, and Adrienne. We are still jetlagged, trying to adjust to the time, and culture shock is an understatement. Then again, its not too terribly different. Except the driving. I can not begin to tell you the insanity in how they drive, thousands of smart cars flying down the road squeezing in every nook, no one stays in lanes just on top of one another. We have already seen many scooters hit by car drivers, or just the general public walking is a nightmare. I don’t know how there aren’t more  regulations or more deaths. You can’t even get your arm out the window…it will get knocked off!
APARTMENT-Via Cipro, 47 Scala B Int. C-ground floor
-a few pictures of the interior, all furniture is IKEA, we also have a back patio with table chairs where we can sit at in the evening, as well as lines to dry our clothes on, looking up from the patio is completely open to the sky where you see 4 more floors above, where if you do not mind the quiet hours after 11pm, people do tend to dump water on your head from above.

Very spacious, large bathroom-incredibly small shower and tub, fully stocked, and only a block or two from a large market.
We all slept for hours once we arrived and unpacked.
Welcome Dinner at a quaint restaurant called Taverne Parione. The group of us studying, leaders and their families, as well as many donors who are spending some time here with us and taking care of the bill after eating 2 full courses, appetizers, salad, and the absolute best Tiramisu I have ever had!!! They are wonderful sponsors and have done so much for us and are still taking the best of care with anything we may need. The Accent staff running the program is just as great, including Bruno. We did get lost walking to the dinner, and ended up getting directions from a lovely Italian woman who spoke English…it just happened to be Michael Waltrip’s (NASCAR) personal trainer for 2+years. SMALL WORLD. She lived in North Carolina awhile, but we spent more time talking about Bristol Motor Speedway.

Welcome dinner

Additional photos I’ll share with everyone later.
